Identifying Denso or Valeo heater units in VAG vehicles

From around 2011 onwards, various VW Golf and Passat models – as well as other VAG variants, eg Audi A3, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, etc – had two types of heater/aircon unit installed, either a Valeo or Denso type.

Unfortunately even using the VIN, it is not always possible to identify the correct one, and the only way to ensure you select the right one is to know which type your vehicle has by physically inspecting it.

To check the arrangement of the coolant pipes, according to the VW service & repair manual, you’ll need to remove the left centre console trim in the footwell.
